Whether you’re moving in the same area or across states, planning ahead can make your move more seamless.

  • If you are planning to use a moving company research different options, decide which one fits your needs and budget and schedule moving day.  Typically weekends are the busiest times for movers and will book up fast.
  • Go by the post office or online to fill out change of address form.  Make sure you notify your doctors, dentists, vet, child’s school, insurance companies as well as your family and friends.  You don’t want to miss any important documents or letters.
  • Contact utilities, cable, water and phone for disconnects as well as making sure you arrange for services at your new location.  Sometimes if using a new vendor for services, a connection fee will be required.
  • Make necessary financial arrangements, including transferring of accounts.
  • Take inventory of your belongings before they are packed in case you have to file an insurance claim later.  This can be in a list form, pictures or videos.
  • Some items you may want to consider moving yourself, such as jewelry, valuables, safe deposit box, and important documents.
  • Empty fluids from lawn mowers, lawn equipment and hoses.
  • Dispose of any flammables such as gas cans, paint cans, and chemicals properly.
  • Make arrangements for transporting pets.
  • Empty the refrigerator, make sure its wiped cleaned and leave a box of baking soda to keep it smelling fresh.
  • Remember to pack for your personal move.  Since everything will be boxed up make sure you have handy: toilet paper, a few cleaning supplies, paper towels, snacks, water, change of clothes, and tooth brush.

This list isn’t meant to be exhaustive, but hopefully, it will get you started, and save you some time, money, and possibly prevent a headache or two.
